Courtesy releases her second album on her own label Against Interpretation. [https://djmag.com/reviews/courtesy-intimate-yell]
The Danish producer’s career has been grounded in variety — from the widescreen ambient of 2022’s ‘Night Journeys’ EP, to the synth-pop explorations (and Enya cover) of her debut record ‘fra eufori’. Her latest, ‘intimate yell’, is another diversion, albeit one more in line with her club-driven DJ sets.
Pulling together threads of deep house, IDM, breaks and ambient, ‘intimate yell’ moves between melodic, hooky party-starters (‘My Dazed Friend’, ‘Crush (deconstructed)’), introspective sounds (‘Wrote this for somebody’) and heads down club cuts (‘I’m happy I am not Susan Sontag’). Despite the breadth of sounds on display here, Courtesy is never one to lightly dabble — ‘intimate yell’ is cohesive throughout and maintains a moody, aptly intimate feel. Nine tracks of tightly produced late-night dance music that straddles the lines of accessibility and experimentation.
