The “dark factory” represents the peak of industrial automation. It’s named for the idea that operations can run without any human presence—machines don’t need lights, so a fully automated plant could operate in the dark.
The first human surrender to a robot occurred in the 1991 Gulf War: In February 1991, during Operation Desert Storm, Iraqi soldiers surrendered to an RQ-2 Pioneer unmanned aerial vehicle operated by the USS Wisconsin.
